Other Culinary details: Free coffee for a year:

Urru Culinary Store & Clive Mc Cabe Coffee present:

Free Tasting of New Coffee Bean Blends &

Free Entry Draw for Free Coffee for a Year

A quality cup of coffee is one of the main attractions for local & visiting customers alike in coming into Urru. Since we opened in 2003 we have proudly served Clive Mc Cabe’s Sumatra Lingtong beans for all our coffees.

We now think it’s time to shake things up or see if you think sticking with what we have is really the best.

We are going to run a series of FREE COFFEE TASTINGS of some new, award winning blends that Stephen, Clive’s son, has introduced into the business in recent times. This will give us first hand feedback from our customers on what they think tastes best.

Starting on Saturday 14 2012 we will be serving a complimentary espresso or Americano using the two gold star winning Classic Italia Blend. Other blends that will be tasted over the coming weeks are – Romano Blend (rich roast Columbia Supremo & Brazil Santos); Espresso Italia (100% Arabica beans dark roasted from Colombia & Award Winning); Organic Blend (smooth & mellow 100% Arabica from South America) as well as our current bean (100% Sumatra Lingtong).

Free Tastings will take place on:

  • Saturday 14 July 11am – 12 noon (followed by French Wine Tasting to celebrate Bastille Day)
  • Saturday 21 July 11am – 12 noon
  • Saturday 11 August 11am – 12 noon
  • Saturday 18 August 11am – 12 noon
  • Saturday 25 August 11am – 12 noon

Tasters will be asked to complete a simple rating card which will then be entered into a free entry draw for ONE YEAR’S FREE COFFEE. All customers will be welcome to enter the draw which will be drawn on Saturday 25 August 2012.

The winner will be entitled to one free standard Americano per day (Mon – Sat) from Saturday 01 September 2012 – Saturday 31 August 2013 inclusive. (No substitutes or transfers will be available. Full standard terms & conditions are available in-store on the entry box).

New book on St Patrick’s Church:

I have just purchased the recently published book on the 150th anniversary of St Patrick’s church. (or more formerly: The Church Of The immaculate Conception Saint Patricks Bandon 1861 – 2011)

Words fail me … and that is a first! It is not just a treasure trove of facts and amazing history but it is obviously a book of that was created out of love and endearment for a place that is very important in the lives of so many people.

Special credit must be given to the 150th Anniversary Book Committee. They’ll be embarrassed if I mention them but I do believe that Fr Denis O’Leary P.P., John O’Donoghue, Carol Hurley, Kathleen Canty, Fr Myles McSweeney C.C., Pat McCarthy, Don Brennan, Pat Canniffee, Pat McCarron and John Desmond deserve all the praise that they can get.

This is a ‘must buy’ item for anyone in Bandon and would make the perfect gift for anyone with Bandon connections.

The book is available from all good retailers in Bandon.

Patrick Keohane Memorial project: www.patrickkeohane.org

This project is currently underway and the unveiling of a statue to commemorate the amazing exploits of our own local hero will take place on August 19th near Lislee church (between Broadstrand and Blindstrand near Courtmnacsherry)

Check out the www.patrickkeohane.org website for some interesting and informative details on his exploits. There is also a section in the ‘links’ page outlining activities for young people if they are bored during the bad weather.

Bandon FEWS:

http://www.bandonfloodwarning.ie/bandonfloodrelief.htm

The public meeting has come and gone and people have had their opportunity to view and comment on the future of the works being planned. The above website gives links to all of the relevant material planned for Bandon.

You may wish to download some of the files available for future reference.

It cannot be stressed enough that all locals and businesses should ensure that they are familiar with what is being undertaken. There is an obvious fear that these works may impact severely on life in Bandon …. if people are informed … then appropriate decisions can be made to reduce any negative impact of the works.

We are all aware that the works are for the long term improvement of the town …. we just need to ensure that we ‘ride out the storm’ so that we can build to a bigger and better future for all.

Bandon Flood Emergency Plan:

This a project very dear to me as I fear that unless we keep on the pressure … simply nothing will be done. Having spoken to various people recently about this … there appears to be a fear and frustration that nothing has yet been done.

I’m fully aware that there is Cork County Flood Emergency Plan: http://www.corkcoco.ie/co/web/Cork%20County%20Council/Severe%20Weather/Flooding%20Information/Flood%20Emergency%20Guide and that a guide is available: http://www.corkcoco.ie/co/pdf/812199238.pdf. (Having read over these … it is surprising how similar they are to links posted on this website c.2 years ago. )

It is felt that these plans should be adopted with specific reference to the demands of Bandon. I propose the creation of a booklet for residents and businesses within the local area who may be affected by flooding.

The booklet could outline:

  • How the alarm will be raised. (Text / Siren from Fire Station)
  • Where sandbags and sand are available
  • Emergency contact details
  • What the various response groups are permitted to do. (I think this is important as there appears to be confusion over who does what and when they have permission to go out on duty)
  • How people can help the Gardai, Fire Brigade, Ambulance Service and other emergency-aid groups.
  • I think it is important that the lead could come from the emergency services. They are the experts, have the communication systems and the necessary equipment. They know best protocol and any plan should follow their advice.
  • Any local plan will not be telling the emergency services what to do but supporting any action taken by them. If done correctly, this will be a win-win relationship between the town and stakeholders.
  • Simple question: Can we afford not to have one?
